My Playlister at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Glasgow

This is My Playlister

Somethin’ Else created a special programme to play tracks chosen by the event’s audience and produced content for the station’s social media channels

As part of Radio 1’s Big Weekend, we created a special My Playlister programme to go out on the Wednesday following the event, with tracks picked by the Big Weekend crowd in Glasgow. On top of producing the hour-long show, our aim was to capitalise on audience interaction and produce content for as many of BBC Radio 1’s social media channels as possible.

Before the weekend, we posted bespoke videos on Radio 1’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to let the audience know that we would be recording over the weekend. On Facebook alone this reached well over 450,000 people and was an important part of Radio 1’s social media hype in the run up to the event.

We asked people at the event on Saturday and Sunday to select their Ultimate Festival Track and the responses were many and varied.  The big surprise was there was only one request for One Direction, with Prince, ZZ Top and The Sugarhill Gang among the audience’s choices.

A selection of the requests made up the final show, with 14 tracks and over 30 voices making the cut. Plus the (almost) full list of requests can be found on this 50-song-strong BBC Playlister playlist on Spotify.

Following the event we compiled a ‘supercut’ of everyone who spoke to us, which we posted on Radio 1’s Soundcloud, Twitter and Facebook accounts. Unsurprisingly, when we sent this link directly to the crowd members we’d spoken to they were also pretty keen to share it for us!

We also took photos of every contributor which we compiled into an Instavid and collage to be posted on Radio 1’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts. These images included the contributor’s Twitter handles and the show’s hashtag to increase the social conversation around the show.

We had a fantastic response to the show across all social media platforms and served as a great example of connecting to, building relationships with and rewarding our audience.
