Jazz on 3 and BBC Introducing offer new artists opportunity to get their music heard

As part of the BBC’s continuing mission to bring the best new creative music to the airwaves, Jazz on 3, BBC Radio 3’s flagship contemporary jazz show, has teamed up with BBC Introducing to offer a new way for rising artists to get their music heard. We’re inviting bands who are unsigned, undiscovered or under the radar to submit demos, home-made recordings or CD tracks via the BBC Introducing Uploader.

In the run-up to the 2011 Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Jazz on 3 team will draw up a long-list of bands who’ve submitted their music via the BBC Uploader. The list will be reviewed by a panel consisting of Gilles Peterson (Radio 1), Jamie Cullum (Radio 2) and Jez Nelson (Radio 3), who will decide on a final line-up.

The four successful bands will perform in front of a live audience on the freestage at the 2011 Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Recordings of their sets will feature on Jazz on 3 and be made available to Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide, Jamie Cullum’s Jazz Show and BBC Introducing shows across Radio 1, Radio 2, 1Xtra, 6Music and Asian Network.

Presenter Jez Nelson:

“Jazz on 3 is all about new music. UK jazz is going through a fantastic phase and I’m really excited at the prospect that BBC Introducing will help us discover some great new talent.”

Upload your music now at www.bbc.co.uk/music/introducing Your music will automatically get sent to your local BBC station and to a national show of your choice, including Radio 3’s Jazz on 3.  Make sure you select Jazz on 3 as your national show choice in order to be considered for this opportunity.

There’s an opportunity for journalists to track the selection process and to interview panel members. For further information please contact Jazz on 3 producer Joby Waldman via Somethin’ Else.

If you’re making music and you’d like greater exposure, upload your tracks at bbc.co.uk/introducing and let us hear what you’ve got to offer. Your music will go direct to your local Introducing show, but you can also send it direct to us by choosing the Jazz on 3 option when you register.

Jazz On 3 is BBC Radio 3’s weekly contemporary jazz show. Jez Nelson presents the pick of today’s jazz recorded live in concert, talks to the leading players, reviews new CDs, and revisits the tradition through in-depth features. From week to week you can hear free jazz to fusion, post-bop to electronica. We don’t really care how it’s labeled as long as it’s good. Above all Jazz on 3 celebrates the music as a living and developing art form.

Cheltenham Jazz Festival (27th April – 2nd May 2011) is one of Europe’s leading jazz festivals hosting the very best in jazz and beyond with a wide ranging programme of the finest contemporary British and international jazz artists alongside blues icons, world rhythms and unique club nights. The full programme for 2011 will be announced in February.
