Our Jam: Cannonball Adderley’s Somethin’ Else

Our CEO Jez Nelson picks the track behind the company’s name.

Every week a different member of the Somethin’ Else team will pick the company’s Jam. To start, we go back to the beginning with Jez Nelson (@JezNelson)

“Somethin’ Else still feels like a great name for a company to me. The truth is the idea came, like many of the best ones, from a moment of last minute inspiration.

“My friend Chris Phillips and I co-hosted a late night jazz show on Jazz FM back in the early 90s. The programme was to play jazz – but alongside funk, soul and hip hop – quite radical for that time.

“Thirty minutes before we went on air for the first show we still didn’t have a name for the programme. So we dived in to the record library and started flipping through the Blue Notes. I think to give him his due it was Chris who landed on Cannonball Adderley’s Somethin’ Else and it seemed perfect – featuring some of our favourite musicians; Miles Davis, Art Blakey and Cannonball himself. The cover was the epitome of Blue Note cool – just gorgeous, hip typography with a hint of colour. And the name seemed to say it all – we wanted to do, be and say Somethin’ Else.

“When we launched a company we took the name with us and it still feels just right. Watch this space as it’s time to reclaim this great name and ideal.

“The tune itself is a simple, sweet, loping little modal ditto with some restrained and pretty playing from Miles and pianist Hank Jones.

“This is, and will always be, my Jam!”
